The business was originally started in 1932 by Milton Wakefield
(Steve Wakefield's uncle). The business was located in an old cabin
and a part of the horse barn, used by the Ferguson family for the
Humboldt Stageline going up to Chester. The cabin was one of many
along the creek used by the drivers of the Stageline. In 1936 Milton
Wakefield called his brother Willard (Steve's dad) and asked him to
come to Chico and work with him at Wakefield Auto
Glass.
In about 1949 the "new" building, the one we are currently
in, was being built and  finished
in 1950. In 1962 Willard and Bonnie Wakefield (Steve's parents) bought
the building and it was a 100% a family business; grandpa even vacuumed
the carpet!
In 1983 changes had to be made to the family business when PG &
E started an energy program, called the Zero Interest Program (ZIP).
Customers were able to borrow any amount of money to get storm windows,
insulation or anything contributing to energy savings. A sales manager,
a salesman and a phone solicitor were hired. In 1984 a small shop
was opened in Redding however closed again in 1986. The ZIP program
ended and severely reduced the storm window business.
 Today
Wakefield and Sons Glass is owned and operated
by Steve and Betty Wakefield. We strive to fulfill our philosophy,
which is living by "The Golden Rule": We treat people the
way we would like to be treated! There is a real bias towards service
to the customer by everyone working in our business. We are proud
of the quality of our work and each and every product we sell.
We want to be perceived as an excellent and honest company by
all of our customers and the community we operate in. We are continually
striving to improve and serve all. Our long-term goal and principal
effort is to grow and improve our existing business to be the best
it can be.
